It’s WICKED weekend - thank goodness!

I won’t be seeing the movie until next week (ya know - doing show and getting these kiddos to Thanksgiving break), so I’ll do my darndest to stay in a small corner of the internet until then.

But also, we don’t always get the resolution we’d hoped for at the end of year, end of a book, or the closing of anything. How do we move forward?

Last night of dress rehearsal for “Nolan’s Wake”! Our playwright, Patti Veconi, will be joining us for opening night. 👏🏼

I’ve loved and learned so much about putting together my own gigs/concerts this year, but it’s been a welcomed mental and creative pivot to bring someone else’s vision to life as an actor. Our director, Katherine Hammond, encouraged us to really PLAY with this play, and it’s been an honor to develop “Grace” under her guidance. This is the first full 2-hour theatrical production I’ve done here in Virginia since 2017!

If you’re into heartfelt dramas sprinkled with humor, some family dysfunction, and a series of plot twists - join us November 14-22. Tickets at @theztheater homepage. (recommended ages 16+)

You probably recognize this from Disney’s “Coco,” but this Mexican folk song isn’t just an anthem for Día de los Muertos - it’s been around for a long time.

“La Llorona” is inspired by the tale of the weeping woman. Always haunting, it gives the singer a chance to explore the heights and depths of a your range - in which ever way you want to personify the grief expressed in the lyrics.

Some of my favorite versions come from the legendary Chavela Vargas (you may have heard it on the Friday motion picture soundtrack) and Carmen Goett.

Ever since my run with Pelagius The Musical at @thelegacytheatre in GA, I’ve wanted to be a part of a new original theatrical work again.

The creativity, the challenge, and the payoff of knowing you helped bring a playwright’s pages to life is incredibly rewarding (maybe it’s because I’ve been the recipient of gifted artists bringing my visions to life 🥰).

I’m grateful and excited that I’ll get to do this in Virginia Beach with this new work, “Nolan’s Wake”, produced by @theztheater, written by Patti Veconi and directed by Katherine Hammond.

If there’s one phrase I say over and over again it’s:

“Less is more” 🧘🏻‍♀️

And look - I get it! We see and hear what we percieve as belt singing in other artists, and associate that sound with TONS of effort and power. So our brains, bodies, and voices will respond with increased energy - but also with unnecessary tension.

Unless…you’re working with someone who can help you understand how to amplify the sound of YOUR voice, what belting feels and sounds like in YOUR body, and how to do so consistently.

That’s the goal, passionate performer. Not you sounding exactly like [fill in your favorite belter] at the expense of your vocal (and mental) health.

Feel free to reach out if this is on your vocal bucket list. ✨

It’s definitely a sweet spot…offering guidance to rising performers from a place of mental and vocal grounding (something so many of you tell me you didn’t have in your music education)…

and then being on the other side of encouraging adult artists who are repairing their relationship with singing, and crafting a hobby and/or performance career that finally feels like the “dream” they wanted all along.

It’s beautiful. It’s hard. It’s rewarding. It’s life-changing.

And oh SO worth it. ✨

We ain’t got time to give our power away to a past performance blunders and antagonists we used to sing for.

We’re reclaiming our joy as passionate performers.

A gorgeous anthem penned by Rafael Hernandez, covered by Bad Bunny, Marc Anthony, and just about anyone who’s been to or loves P.R. 🇵🇷

Hernandez describes the island as though he’s looking at a beautiful woman. I’ve always performed this sitting at a piano. I’m glad my hands (and my hips 😉) were free to sing and sway the way I always want to when I get to sing this Puerto Rican treasure of a song.

2 1/2 years ago I put pen to paper dreaming up my own cabaret.

“Sugar & Sazón” was supposed to have her debut a year ago. But life had other plans, and everything happened as it was supposed to.
Not only did I get to premiere the show back in March of this year, but do an encore for Hispanic Heritage Month (which was on my goal list for 2025)!

In fact, a year ago, I had the chance to partner with @little_theatre_norfolk for their first VIDA VIBRANTE festival. So when @msmalibu94 invited me to collaborate again, I knew this was the perfect place for this story to be retold.

Each iteration of my cabaret has its own unique style, this time with a new audience on a theatrical stage, and with the fabulous @euthanasia.365 joining @mayaonfiyaaa & myself for the encore! 💃🏻

But the message remains the same - You are wonderfully made. Celebrate ALL of the things that make you - YOU. Don’t sleep any longer on that dream you have, because nobody will be able to do it the way you can.

I don’t have to choose one or the other
‘cause this I know - that I’M Latina”
