Ep. 66: WORLD VOICE DAY - Why do I sing?

Let’s get right to it: Why do YOU sing?

I know—it sounds like such a simple question. But if you’ve been singing for years (or even decades), it can be surprisingly tough to answer. So on this World Voice Day, I’m inviting you to pause for a minute, take a deep breath, and really think about it.

Because whether you’re just now reclaiming your voice or you’ve been performing forever, coming back to your “why” can reignite something powerful.

Coming Home to Your Voice

I grew up surrounded by music. Singing in church, being that choir kid who was always humming something… it’s just always been a part of me. But when someone recently asked me, “Why do you sing?” I froze for a second.

Is it because I love the feeling of connection on stage? Because singing helps me process the world? Because I’ve always felt most like me when I’m making music?

Yes. All of it. And maybe something more.

Our voices change as we grow. And that’s beautiful. But if you’re feeling a little stuck - or like singing’s lost its spark—this might be the perfect time to check in with your creative self and ask what’s really lighting you up right now.

Singing + Mental Clarity: It’s All Connected

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times - singing isn’t just about technique. It’s deeply tied to how we’re doing emotionally and mentally.

I used to push down my feelings and just power through performances. (Hi, perfectionism.) But when I started working through those deeper layers in therapy, I realized just how much tension I was carrying - and how it showed up in my voice.

Now, I always remind my students: working on your voice is also about working on your mindset. Of course, I’m not a therapist, and if you're struggling in a deeper way, please talk to someone qualified. But if singing is bringing up big emotions? That’s not a flaw. That’s a sign there’s something worth listening to.

What’s Sparking Your Creativity Lately?

Here’s a fun question to explore:What’s been living on your playlists lately?

What songs give you goosebumps, or make you wanna cry, or get you dancing around your kitchen? Those moments are clues. They tell you what your heart wants to express right now.

This is such a great place to begin if you’re feeling creatively disconnected. Try asking:

  • What music feels like a “hell yes” right now?

  • What emotions do I want to express when I sing?

  • What kind of stories am I excited to tell?

The more curious you get, the more clarity you’ll find.

Don’t Forget the Power of Yet

So if you’ve been holding your voice back to meet expectations or make yourself smaller… this is your reminder: Your voice isn’t gone. It’s just waiting for you to come back to it.

Whether you’re singing in your bedroom, in front of a mic, or in your car at red lights, your voice matters. And your reason for singing? It can shift. It can evolve. That’s a good thing.
