Ep. 81: Singer to Confident Artist: 3 Signs You're Growing

Listen, I know this podcast (and honestly, this whole space we share) is about problem-solving — getting better, pushing ourselves, facing the things that need improvement as passionate performers. But today, I want to flip that around.

Because sometimes we forget to stop and acknowledge the truth: ✨ You’re growing. ✨ You’re evolving. ✨ You’re becoming the singer and performer you’ve always wanted to be.

So today, I want to celebrate that growth — and share a few real-life stories from some of the singers inside The Passionate Performer Program who are right there in the trenches with you, doing the work and seeing the transformation.

You Can Receive Praise Without Shrinking

Let’s be honest — it’s wild that we can stand in front of an audience, pour our hearts out, and then still feel weird when someone says, “You were amazing.”

Sound familiar?

One of my clients — a total powerhouse who’s performed professionally and dreams of the Broadway stage — told me recently that after a show, someone complimented her voice and performance. And for the first time, instead of deflecting or cringing, she thought to herself, “Yeah. That’s true.”

And she didn’t feel guilty about it.

That’s huge!

For so many of us, confidence has been confused with conceit. But there’s a big difference:

Conceit is elevating yourself at the expense of others. Confidence is being your own first champion while celebrating everyone WITH you.

When you can receive praise without shrinking — when you can say, “Thank you, I worked hard for that” — you’ve stepped into a new level of artistic confidence.

So, take a moment to journal about those moments. Screenshot those encouraging comments. Save that message from the person who said your song moved them. Those reminders aren’t about ego — they’re proof of your evolution.

You’re Becoming a Playful Explorer, Not Just a Rule Follower

Another one of my longtime singers — she’s been training with me for over a decade — used to describe herself as a total rule follower.

She’d get annoyed when someone sang along to the radio and didn’t sing it exactly like the artist.

But over time, something shifted. The more she learned technique — breath support, tone, pitch — the more freedom she found. That structure gave her the confidence to start experimenting.

Now, she plays. She improvises. She tries new phrasing. She explores.

And she told me something beautiful: her playfulness in singing has started showing up in her life. She’s not as anxious about making the “right” decision. She’s more willing to go with the flow.

Because once you learn to trust your instincts in your artistry, you start trusting yourself everywhere.

So here’s your challenge this week:Take one phrase of a song — just one — and flip it.If it normally goes up, try taking it down.If it ends quietly, try belting it.

No wrong answers. Just curiosity and courage.

You’re No Longer Waiting for Permission to Be Seen

This one gives me chills every time.

A client of mine — someone who grew up hearing “you’re too loud” or “singing isn’t a real career” — recently started posting short clips of herself singing online.

Just 15 to 20 seconds. No fancy lighting. No full tracks. Just her voice.

She’s using this as her own little virtual stage — a place to reclaim joy and visibility

.And now she’s building connections with other singers, finding encouragement in the comments, and creating a digital space that reflects who she really is.

She’s no longer waiting for permission. She’s showing up.

And if you’ve been waiting for that too — here’s your gentle nudge: Record a short clip this week. You don’t even have to post it yet.Just practice the art of showing up.

Then, when you’re ready, share it. You might be surprised who you inspire.

YOU are worth celebrating!

These stories aren’t isolated wins — they’re signs of a deeper shift. You’re learning to trust yourself. You’re finding joy in the process. You’re showing up for your art and yourself.

And if you’re craving that kind of community and accountability — that space where your growth is celebrated every week — that’s exactly what we do inside our studio membership.
